This "Bestimmungsbuch Archäologie Band 3" is dedicated to a group of objects that is unspectacular at first glance and has never been put into a catchy typological scheme: needles from the Upper Palaeolithic to the High Middle Ages.

Sewing needles and pins are indispensable in the manufacture of clothing, needles are used as jewelry, for body decoration or as a tool for metalworking. The materials used are bone or metal, simple designs are found alongside elaborate, even figuratively decorated examples. This book can be used by both laymen and scientists and offers various levels of indexing for inventorying. Each term is accompanied by a definition, a source reference and an illustration. Information on dating and distribution is provided to help classify the object types.
